February 17. Matthew 22

The Greatest Commandment

Matthew 22:34-40 is a foundational scripture for living out discipleship.

Jesus has just gone through intense questioning and attempts to trick him when the Pharisees ask him this very important question: “Which is the greatest commandment in the Law?” (vs 36)

Jesus gives us a very clear answer to their question: “Love the Lord your God” (vs 37). However, loving God with all your heart, soul, and mind is no simple task. Loving God is so often tied to emotions and feelings, yet this passage does not mention emotions. Loving God is a decision we make each and every day, no matter what our feelings, circumstances, or thoughts are telling us.

In this passage Jesus is referencing the original commands given in Deuteronomy 6. Here Moses reminds the people,

“These commandments that I give you today are to be on your hearts. 7 Impress them on your children. Talk about them when you sit at home and when you walk along the road, when you lie down and when you get up.” (vs 6-7)

Moses and God knew that we would need to consistently train ourselves to be reminded to love God in this way and to keep the other commandments. Each day let's remind ourselves to love God fully with all of our heart, soul, mind, and strength. Put aside the emotional expectations you may have about needing to feel like you love God and make a choice to live out love with resilience.

The second greatest commandment is an important way that we can live out love. Loving our neighbors or those around us is how we demonstrate God's love (we are reminded of this in 1 John 4:7). By following the first commandment and making a choice to love God ourselves, we get the opportunity to share this love with others and obey the second commandment.

Practical:

What is an aspect or characteristic of God that you love? Spend time praising him and expressing your love and gratitude to him.

How can you literally love your neighbor today? Choose someone in the house next to you, in your apartment complex, or in your neighborhood and show them God’s love.
