Drs Mike and Mary Shapiro return to VA (via Zoom) to guide us through a very important parenting workshop. Here’s the agenda for the day:
RESILIENT KIDS PARENTING WORKSHOP
10:00-10:30 The Core of Parenting:
This is a brief introduction on the great legacy of parenting: how the way you parent will affect your kids' futures, and those of generations of kids to come. Leviticus 26 shows how God parents his children, which should serve as a model for us: establishing authority, laying down rules, but then giving children free will and freedom of choice. The session concludes with practical hints on developing a great relationship with your child, communicating openly, and making your home a refuge from the world.
10:30-12:00 The Call of Parenting:
This is suitable for all parents, but directed mainly to the parents of toddler through pre-teen aged kids. Mike and Mary will discuss neurological development, and how to make age-appropriate expectations for behavioral and spiritual growth. Communication, how to avoid exasperating your kids (Ephesians 6:4), the importance of affection, four different styles of parenting, and (most importantly) rewards and punishments (including a discussion on corporal punishment).
1:00-2:00 The Culture of Parenting:
All about teens and special teen issues: depression, suicide and self-harm, anxiety disorders, behavior disorders, and practical tips for managing these disorders.
2:00-2:30 Parenting Special Needs Kids:
A brief introduction regarding general principles on how to parent kids with autism, depression, or ADHD.
