Correction through Biblical Truth and Emotional Appeal
The Corinthian Church was, in some regards, the flagship fellowship of Paul’s missionary effort. Paul writes passionately, longing to be received by the congregation follow his rebuke of the assembly’s self-ambition and debauchery. Ever wise to the growing contempt of his ministry, Paul intertwines biblical truth with emotional appeal to exert his authority over the Corinthians. Paul gives all power, all authority back to Jesus Christ, who he professes to be a servant of, seeking to model his discipleship after the life of Christ. Paul’s message to select members of the church is to see correction in view of Christ, and to receive correction with joy in being called to model Christ.
Unity is a tremendous task in the church. Fighting for each other’s hearts and bearing with one another in love requires humility. Any correction feels like a battle of wills rather than a battle for the soul when Christ is not kept in perspective. I hate conflict. I hate criticism. I immediate am overwhelmed with feelings of rejection when I understand that I haven’t met an expectation. Curiously, it’s these conversations that have spurred me to take a closer look into God’s word. I have an opportunity to allow the Spirit to transplant my old habits with practices, disciplines that bring life and freedom. I desperately need outside input to be conscious of what it is to “experience me”. Am I reflecting Christ? “As water reflects the face, so one’s life reflects the heart”(Proverbs 27:19). My church family bears witness of Christ and my life. They offer me Spirit-guided insight that aids in my renewal. Praise be to God who adequately supplies us with brothers and sisters to help us in our pilgrimage!
