Make the Best Choice!
At the end of Luke 10, Jesus says to Martha, “Martha, Martha…you are worried and upset about many things, but few things are needed—or indeed only one. Mary has chosen what is better, and it will not be taken away from her” (Luke 10:41-42).
How do we choose what is better/best? Jesus gives us some ideas in this chapter.
He told them, “The harvest is plentiful, but the workers are few. Ask the Lord of the harvest, therefore, to send out workers into his harvest field” (Luke 10:2). So, praying for the harvest of souls is important, and in verse 20 when the 72 come back excited, Jesus says, “However, do not rejoice that the spirits submit to you, but rejoice that your names are written in heaven.” Jesus tells us to truly rejoice: that our names are written in heaven.
Then we get more insight into what Jesus thinks when the expert in the law asks, “Teacher, what must I do to inherit eternal life?” and Jesus answered, “‘Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your strength and with all your mind’; and, ‘Love your neighbor as yourself’” (Luke 10:25-27). And in case you can’t figure out who your neighbor is, Jesus goes on with the parable of the Good Samaritan.
In this chapter, Jesus teaches us very important lessons, and Mary chose to sit at Jesus’s feet and listen to Him. We need to do the same!
